Supplements for Anxiety and Depression

When it comes to treating mental health, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Every person’s journey is unique and calls for a carefully personalized mix of approaches. For some, medication or therapy alone may be enough. Others may benefit more from interventional treatments like ketamine therapy. Lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, better sleep, and balanced nutrition are always recommended to enhance overall well-being and complement other treatments.

Supplements can also play a role in supporting emotional and physical health. Below are some supplements we recommend that are backed by research and have shown promise in easing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Important Note: While supplements may offer benefits, they generally have less evidence supporting their effectiveness compared to medications or treatments like ketamine therapy. They are not meant to replace prescriptions but can be a valuable addition to your care plan. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements, as they may interact with medications or underlying health conditions.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, are essential for brain health and mood regulation. These healthy fats support neuron communication and reduce inflammation, which is often linked to depression.

  • What It’s For: Depression and mood stabilization.

  • How It’s Taken: Typically available as softgel capsules. Also found naturally in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines.

  • Recommended Dosage: 1,000–2,000 mg daily of combined EPA and DHA, with at least 60% EPA.

L-Methylfolate

L-methylfolate is a bioavailable form of folate (vitamin B9) that helps produce key neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. It is particularly effective for people with naturally low folate levels, which can contribute to symptoms of depression.

  • What It’s For: Depression.

  • How It’s Taken: Typically available in tablet or capsule form.

  • Recommended Dosage: 15 mg daily. Choose L-methylfolate (rather than plain "methylfolate") for its superior effectiveness and bioavailability.

Lavender Oil (Silexan)

Lavender oil, in a clinical form known as Silexan, is a natural remedy for anxiety. It has calming effects without causing drowsiness, making it ideal for managing stress during the day.

  • What It’s For: Anxiety and stress.

  • How It’s Taken: Typically available in capsule form.

  • Recommended Dosage: 80 mg daily, in the morning.

Magnesium

Magnesium, often referred to as “nature’s relaxant,” plays a critical role in calming the nervous system and reducing symptoms of anxiety. It also helps stabilize mood and improve sleep quality.

  • What It’s For: Anxiety, stress, and sleep support.

  • How It’s Taken: Typically available as capsules, tablets, or powders that can be mixed with water. Also found naturally in foods like nuts, seeds, and leafy greens.

  • Recommended Dosage: 200–400 mg daily, in the evening.

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)

NAC is a powerful antioxidant that supports brain health by replenishing levels of glutathione, a vital compound for reducing oxidative stress. Emerging evidence shows promise for depression, bipolar disorder, and OCD, but the evidence isn’t as strong as the others mentioned above and is still considered experimental in mental health contexts.

  • What It’s For: Depression and brain health support.

  • How It’s Taken: Typically available in capsule or powder form.

  • Recommended Dosage: 1,000 mg twice daily.
